Why I Sued the Government – A film about Anjali Sharma-Youth Climate Actist

Anjali and David Pocock have joined forces to create a private members bill

requiring the government to consider its ‘duty-of-care’ to the next generation

when assessing new fossil fuel projects. They are running a campaign to persuade members of parliament to vote for their bill, via ‘Letition’

Australian emissions

40% of global coal exports come from Australia.

Australia is also the largest producer of natural gas in the world.

By 2030, Australia’s Scope 3 emissions (that means the emissions generated when our fossil fuels are burnt)) from present and upcoming coal and gas projects are forecast to generate more than 12 per cent of all global emissions.

Australia’s population is 27million souls, 0.33% of global population, so we are punching above our weight, and we are punching hard!

As well as the emissions generated by our coal and gas, Australia’s per capita emissions are among the highest in the entire world, at around 20 tons per person per anum. Australia is not some inconsequential little backwater. For a relatively unpopulated country, we have a vastly disproportionate effect on life on earth, and it is not a good effect!

Castlemaine Repair Café

We are a group of Castlemaine region residents who believe it is better to repair things wherever possible rather than to throw them away. We have created a space called the ‘Castlemaine Repair Cafe’, where local people can bring clothes, radios, toys and all kinds of household goods to be repaired, and learn how to do it themselves!

Held on the last Sunday of every month

Mount Alexander Sustainability Group Inc. (MASG)

MASG is working towards our Net Zero by 2030 vision, by taking direct action over many fronts.

MASG, though its commitment to Zero Net Emissions by 2030, has undertaken a variety of projects and programs.  The Wararack Initiative (see below) has taken a high level view of the Zero Net Emissions target and MASG has contributed to this with Peter Brain’s Towards Net Zero – MASG Program Report

We want to hear your ideas about how we can transition into a zero net emissions shire.

A collaborative platform called OurSay is being set up in order to harvest community climate action ideas and projects. This platform will include existing projects, the ideas submitted to the Council’s Climate Change Forum late last year, and will also be open for all community members to add new ideas and vote on their priorities. hear more at https://saltgrass.podbean.com/e/s2-e21-what-is-znet/

My Home Network

My Home Network was formed in 2019 in response to increasing community concern about the lack of affordable, safe, secure, and sustainable housing across Mount Alexander Shire, and the resulting crisis of homelessness/being unhoused.

My Home Network advocates for greater housing support to vulnerable people in the community, and increased and improved crisis, transition, social and affordable housing provision. The Network also explores innovative solutions with local community members to meet the long-term housing needs and reduce housing stress.

If you want to help everyone across Mount Alexander Shire to have access to affordable, safe, secure, and sustainable housing, you can:

  • join a My Home Network working group
  • sign up for the My Home Network mailing list
  • discuss the potential of donating or selling land to the above housing projects with a My Home Network expert
  • consider listing your rental property with a not-for-profit real estate and or renting out rooms
  • assist in community responses/supports for those in housing crisis eg meals and assistance with moving house
