When Australia declined to join Britain, France and Canada in their threat to impose sanctions on Israel, the cowardice of our government was laid bare. The world saw a nation led by gutless wonders!

This newly minted government of ours has an over-abundance of political capital. If there was ever a time when they could do exactly what they have always wanted, without fear of losing power, now is that time. Will they dust off their long dormant humanity, or has it shriveled to a dried out husk that cannot be revived?

When questioned on their ongoing silence in the face of this unprecedented cruelty and degradation, our leaders trot out the same worn out excuse, that they don’t want to exacerbate divisions in society here in our tranquil little backwater. ‘Let’s ignore all that nasty stuff going on over there. It has nothing to do with us.’

Ironically enough, the very reason the Zionists were supported in their occupation of Palestine in the first place, is because the entire world was united in their desire to avoid division in their own societies. Division brought on by an influx of Jewish refugees fleeing genocide. In 1938 an international conference was held specifically to decide what to do with Jewish refugees fleeing Germany. The decision was almost unanimous, absolutely nothing! No country was willing to raise their refugee quota for the Jews, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, who offered to take in 10,000 desperate souls. One brave nation in a world of indifference. By 1942 the world had become aware that Jews were being systematically exterminated, so another conference was urgently convened, with the same shameful result, all doors remained firmly shut. True to their word, any ship carrying Jewish refugees was turned away from every port.

So when the Zionists proposed their plan to occupy Palestine, the United Nations jumped at the chance to be rid of ‘the Jewish problem.’ A decision based entirely on guilt. As we can see, rather than fixing ‘the Jewish problem,’ it created the Zionist problem, an unmitigated disaster, a tragic mistake that has lowered the bar for human depravity and moral turpitude, and trashed the Jewish brand irrevocably. All that sympathy for their suffering under the Nazis has been squandered by the Zionists in Israel, soon there will be none left, and the Zionist experiment will be abandoned.

Eventually, the Jewish diaspora were allowed to settle in many countries around the world, including Australia, where they have been welcomed and embraced. As the great Jewish writer Philip Roth has said, “Jewish culture thrives in the diaspora.” The diaspora is also the best guarantee of safety from persecution. ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.’

Australia was founded on racism. After a determined effort to extirpate the local blackfullas, the very first act of parliament in 1901 was The White Australia policy. Legislators were unanimous in their conviction that the only way to avoid racism was to exclude all the other races. Fortunately we have belatedly turned that assumption on its head, becoming one of the most diverse and, dare I say, harmonious nations around. We did not achieve this status by ignoring the plight of oppressed people, including Jews and Palestinians.
