At this critical juncture in the ongoing tragedy of Gaza, it is timely to consider the future for this blighted strip of land, which soon leads one to ponder the future of its nemesis, whose name I dare not utter.
They say ‘don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good,’ but we should always maintain a very clear picture of the best possible outcome, even if at this moment in time it appears unachievable.
Israel is a rogue state operating outside international law and beyond the limits of acceptable behaviour we have set for ourselves as members of the human race, way beyond. Benjamin Netanyahu is in a league of his own in that respect.
Ilan Pappa, highly respected Israeli/British historian says, “Israelis are THE most indoctrinated people in the world outside North Korea.*
Israel is not fit to be given the status of a state. If it ever deserved that status is a matter for conjecture, but surely its most recent actions mean it has forfeited the right to be a member of the league of nations.
After the genocide perpetrated against the Jews by Adolf Hitler, they were keen to get away from Europe as far and as fast as possible, but to our shame, we turned them away from every nation where they sought sanctuary. (so we can all share the blame for the present predicament) Taking stock of the impasse, and hoping to assuage our collective guilt, the freshly minted United Nations, in its naïve infancy, made a hasty and impulsive decision to offer the long suffering and traumatized Jewish people a homeland, right slap bang in the middle of someone else’s cherished homeland, a thoughtless and insensitive act they would soon come to regret!
Since that ill-conceived moment Israel has consistently and violently trampled almost every other decision of the U.N. including the hundreds vetoed automatically by their collaborators, the U.S.A. As well as flouting almost every other international law. The present illegal regime no longer deserve the protection of the Untied Nations. or any other country that honours human rights above thuggery.
That same august body has the power to rescind that ill-conceived decision. Obviously that is not going to happen any time soon (not while the USA has anything to do with it) but it is still the right thing to do.
Let’s not bang on about a two state solution that we know will never happen. Let’s bang on about a one state solution we know will never happen…in the foreseeable future anyway, but who can foresee the future in a place with a long history of the unforeseeable occurring on a regular basis. Power sharing, its been done before very successfully in Northern Ireland, one of the most intractable conflicts in modern times.
I can hear the immediate response, ”that will never happen.”
Don’t ever say never! Just insert the idea into the human brain and let it do its work, its amazing the unexpected results that result.
